Vehicle Owner Lookup – What Is It?
Every vehicle has a unique Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). This 17-character alphanumeric code contains information about the make and model of the vehicle, as well as where it was manufactured and what equipment was installed on the vehicle at the factory. A quick VIN decoder will tell you this basic information, but there’s still more to learn from this number.
Since each VIN is unique, it’s used to identify the vehicle in official records. This includes registering the car with the Department of Motor Vehicles, getting it insured, tracking recalls, and making accident and theft reports. A VIN history report pulls from databases containing all this information, giving you a full history of the car, from when it rolled off the assembly line until today. This includes finding financial, government and insurance transactions related to the vehicle. This helps you establish the car’s provenance and uncovers problems that you want to avoid, like hidden accident damage and unpaid liens.
Can a VIN Number Tell You the Registered Owner of a Vehicle?
If you simply decode the VIN, you will only learn about the vehicle’s construction as it left the factory. However, by using our vehicle owner lookup tool, you can find records tied to the VIN, giving you the history of the vehicle, including the number of the previous owners since the first sale.
How to Find a Car’s Owner by VIN Number?
Want to know how to find the registered owner of the vehicle? We can provide information on the number of registered owners, odometer readings, date of purchase, and period of ownership of the vehicle.
First, you will need to get the VIN from the vehicle. While placement varies from model to model, there are a few common places where you can find this number:
- Look for a metal tag on the front driver’s side corner of the dashboard, close to the hood. This tag is placed in a way that it can be viewed through the windshield.
- Open the driver’s door, and look around the door sills and the pillars for stickers. Some manufacturers list the VIN alongside specifications like recommended tire pressures and maximum payload. Others use a separate sticker that lists paint, chassis, and engine information. Don’t forget to look at the outside of the pillar between the driver and rear passenger doors. This sticker might be obscured if the passenger door is open.
- Open the hood, and look around the top of the firewall, strut towers, and radiator support. Often, manufacturers place stickers in these areas or engrave the VIN on these parts.
- Depending on the type of frame construction used by the vehicle, you may find the number engraved into the chassis. Most body-on-frame vehicles, like trucks and full-size SUVs, have this number on the inner frame rails.
- Some manufacturers engrave the VIN or place tamper-proof stickers on parts of the car, including cylinder heads, body pillars, doors, hoods, trunk lids, and windows. That way, these parts can be traced if the car is stolen. However, some numbers may not match since the parts could be salvaged from another vehicle to repair accident damage.
- Newer vehicles often list the VIN somewhere in the settings menu on the infotainment system.
- The VIN is used on official documents for the vehicle. You can find it on the title, loan paperwork, vehicle registrations, bills of sale and insurance policies. It also might be on service receipts.
